" When God began to create[a] the heavens and the earth—the earth was without shape or form."
Genesis 1:1-2a (CEB)
Blank, that is how it all seems to start. I want to start the year off well and meet every best practice as if it was how it always was. I know that starting new things is not likely to become the norm, a habit overnight. Yet, just as a journal or a drawing begins with a blank page, so this new year seems to invite beginning with a clean slate of potential, hope, opportunity.
Now is not the time to worry about what might be. Focusing on and anticipating failure, shortcomings and the feeling of letting down yourself, a loved one, or God is fruitless. Your page will either remain seemingly blank for lack of trying or be filled with either waste of your time and energy or wasted space where your potential goes untapped, or both!
We are all created to be creative and creating beings. Fortunately for us, we have each other, and God our creator, Jesus our greatest advocate and teacher, and the Holy Spirit ever present and motivating us along the way. We don't have to try to figure out what to do with our lives on our own. We need not depend on divine revelation or inspiration in solitude. The world we live in is full of God's creation. Nature, seasons, places, and people are ours to come to know.
So, as you take your first or next steps today, know that the real blank page isn't the one in front your, it was actually that deep at creation which God has already filled. You just need to explore and grow within this world. Seek the divine all around you, within you, and in those you meet along the way.
